Lets hope i can do this short! This seems to be a question a lot of people especially young people ask. I will put forward arguments and facts that were discussed amongst some of my friends.
In 1989 there was a movement for change in the Maldives. There were some few but fearless members of the Majilis who spoke out against the government. They criticized the Gayyoom regime and proposed new bills at the parliament that would have brought about many changes towards a proper democracy.Their actions were halted by violent arrests and intimidation by the NSS. The National Security Force and the Bimbi force [a group of Gayyoom supporters] harassed the reformists and locked them up and resulted in many Maldivians going back into a regressive life of fear. The most prominent candidate who got locked up the most was Mohammed Nasheed [ Anni]. He was a history buff as well as a good writer. His articles in "illegal" magazines were feared but popular read for many citizens who had suffered under Gayyooms rule. When Anni got arrested in the early 90's for being outspoken and critical Waheed [who had won a very competitive seat at the Majilis against the then Minister of Defense] ran a black ribbon campaign amongst the majilis members to protest against the illegal detention of Anni. Anni was THE figure of change and the movement of Democracy in the 90's and as we know today as well. People criticize Dr.Waheed but remember though he left Maldives those days to protect his life and in fear of intimidation and arrest and later when he lost elections in MDP he still has to be given credit for proposing the first human rights bill to the Majilis in the 90's. He was in the education Ministry and brought about a simple radical change that affected so many lives in Male'. He changed the regulation that school children had to attend schools closer to their homes when at the time mothers carried children along unpaved roads and wet puddles in rainy days for about 20 miniutes to get them to school. Then in the past five years Anni has lead the reform movement that created space for Political Party's and free media. He has changed the mind set of many Maldivians to demand for rights and express. Yes he did say he did not want to be president but he always promised to bring down Gayyoom. Then when the people of MDP the largest opposition proposed his name and pushed him to be the president if he had declined he would have killed the whole movement of change.Who better than the person who brought us this far? They started this together...Dr.waheed and Anni...let them have the chance to bring the change we all want...if not..they have created us the space and made us realize we will not accept a failed government anymore.
The most popular candidate next seems to be Dr.Hassan Saeed. Lets remember the past. History repeats itself. Dr.Hassan and Dr.Shaheed together tried in vain to kill the refrom movement and MDP. Remember the weapons of mass construction the MNDF found at Haruge on Hassans claims? hehe. Remember Dr. Shaheed said that a few people as usual on fridays appeared aat the Black Friday gathering when he gave interview to international Media? well Hassan also in DRP supported a ONE party policy and Promoted Gayyoom. Shaheed told BBC that Maumoon was father of Democracy. Then the three of them form a party and call themselves democratic. I wonder how many members voted in their party to choose Hassan as a candidate.NONE!! He is a self proclaimed leader of the people!!! Haassan seems toi be as put forward by one friend " modernizer" of the exisitng regime. He paints it a different colour and adds bits to it but the backbone still is the same. These are all people who participated with Gayyoom. Remember the over 400 people who got locked up for calling golhaa Force and walking on Majeedee magu?? Wonder who gave that order!
track records are always important...none of these people have got or given us enough proof that they are for change and the peoples better lives than Anni and Waheed. This is why it is Anni and Waheed!!! They stand for democracy ...always have and hopefully will...tonigths at the MDP gathering Anni said "if we fail after we win the elections to deliver...you can vote us out...this time when you vote for Anni and Waheed you are voting for yourself".
I cant promise they would be "perfect"...they could be worse..but for sure they would not be a dictator who would hold onto power as they are THE people who let us ahve the power to decide!!! This is peoples RULE! This is democracy!

i agree with you hamxa.. i guessw i am one of the ppl who asked you the questin " why Anni?".. the answer is... there is no one better... no need of talking bout Maumoon. Dr. Hassan also has a personal agenda..and he also have a past...linked to the "tyrant". well here it goes... VOTE ANNI...VOTE TO CHANGE
thats the spirit..remmebr dude..u n me and many more youth will still be here if they go rogue too..we will bring them down just like Anni brought golhaa down..ehhe
Let gayyoom n Umar out of the picture. Consider hassan, gasim n anni. Hassan n Gasim were hoping to become presidents through DRP. Thinking gayyom wil quit without contesting in 2008 n hand them over power. Y else wud u think they advocated on behalf of dictator with wat ever they had. I salute gayyom fo atleast giving these two crooks a hard day. That leaves us with ANNI. A man who never changed his route. An ofcourse that route leads to Aneh dhivehirajje insha allah. (zedzed)

well said Hamza, You have put forward your opinions strongly.Like you said the potential candidates are ANNI and HASAN.
Hasan's devotion and commitment to people is proven by his resignation from the regime. He stll has a horses skin even though he worked for a while in the regime. Its adament to say he is grown crocdile skin from his short infrigment in the regime.
he is still considered clean and yes we need the backbone of roadmap to go ahead with the country. Its not the road map which is the root cause of evil but the dictator holding on it.
why would any one vote for Anni.
1- becuase he is a drug addict.
2-He will supply drugs to any one who wants it.
3-He has less regard to Islam.
These are 3 most important reasons why we should vote Anni.
Vote Ibra - the only thing you will not regret doing this elections.
with you there ZedZed
Ands all you Anonymous commentators...well thank oyu for the comments...this is just my argument...also for the dude who says Anni is a threat to islam and a drug addict...eheh dude...did you go to a cafe inhale ciggarette smoke?m it kislls more ppl and is more addictive...more than 60% of maldivians are ciggarette addicts..and as for islam if u fear he would change islam as a religion dude...Your ageedha is between you and god..if its not strong you might fear...so make it stronger and im sure ur fears will vanish...
As for the roadmap dude..dude gayooms road map faield loang time ago...there is no need for it...we need a new administration and in time thigns will get much better..if not we know wwwat we can do now..dont we!
One of the best articles that you have written in the blog so far. I noticed just one spelling mistake and that is a remarkable improvement. Some corrections. Dr Waheed was elected to parliament in late 1989 but the Majlis started in 1990. Sangu was started in 1990 too. So you can say the reform movement started in 1990. Anni was writing for a registered magazine "Sangu" and for overseas newspapers like The Island of Sri Lanka. He was not writing for "illegal" magazines. You mention that Dr Hassan and Dr Shaheed formed a party. They have not formed a party. They are not prepared to face the accountability that will be part of a functioning party with internal democracy. Good article. At least you can write well when you are serious.
how conveniently have you left out Ibra from the Maldivian political arena. he is a a candidate of untarnished records....Anni on the other hand has proven from time and time again his tendency to lean towards violence and authoritarianism. what worries me the most is his fascination with the British and their way of life. where is his appreciation of the Maldivian culture, its history, its achievements?
besides ibra there is no candidate tht deserves our votes.....the others are either agents of British imperialism, capitalists or defectors......are we then to trust them?
ibra cannot win......tht is why i vote for Maumoon......after all given the choice amongst many evils it is best to choose the least evil.
ibra is our choice.
why ibra?
Why Ibra?

* He is principled: All his decisions and actions have a firm foundation in his principles and beliefs.

So vote for ibra. Ibra is thousands times better than waheed & anni combined together.
Anni is the worst choice .Even Umar could be better.Maldivians were lost for 30 years. Here is your chance to wake up.

Hassan Saeed Video
Ibra left MDP because the leadership if MDP constantly violated MDP's manifesto.
Ibra will not tolerate any injustices. If a rule is not perfect he will make sure the rule is amended and passed before the action is taken.
Ibra is a man of Principle
Ibra's policies is not based on adhoc, shock therapy solutions to patch a gap to find matters worse tomorrow.
Ibra's policies is based on long term development.
www.ibra2008.com will have videos, documents and audio on his policies.
I was there at his Health Policy Launching. It was very interesting. The introduction of emergency evacuation for the critically ill was a very brilliant idea.
Be informed before you vote. Whom you will vote for in your decision.
