Well we now have all these independent commissions and supreme courts and NGO's as well as foreign EU observers as well as local media and foreign media. We have laws about the election and we have agencies in charge of upholding the laws. we have observers who will monitor election vote boxes and counting mechanisms. We have a military and police ready for any uncivil actions.We have an improved Constitution and many political parties with 6 presidential hopefuls.There is little chance it can be rigged!!! i demand anyone who says that to leave the country and go watch elections in America and tell me that its rigged!!!
BUT i do believe that the4re will be attempts to make it seem rigged and attempts to rig it!!! Then again there is the play by Gayyoom of misusing government authority and funds and resources for his campaigning!!! That definitely is a foul in my game!!!
Election fraud is out but we have much bigger problems of voters who are eligible but not registered not being able to vote. We have the improper campaigning of candidates who buy votes and lie their way into getting votes!!!
We have many candidates who served to protect and promote the Dictator and now calling themselves fighters and leaders of Democracy...this election will be free and fair IF the people realize the wrong ways of these candidates and their lies and deception!! Rigging of votes will almost not happen!!!
THIS ELECTION WILL BE COMPARATIVELY FREE AND FAIR COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS REFERENDUMS!!!

it will indeed be a sad day for democracy in maldives if hassan saeed and shaheed wins this election because
a) they don't believe in a multi-party system. they are trying to disguise their disdain for a multi-party system by saying they will opt for a government consisting of best people in the country, if elected. the truth is even Anni can pick a cabinet consisting of people from outside MDP if elected. MDP's alliance with Gaumee Ithihad is the first indication that MDP is open to compromise. Anni has invited Ibra and other players to join this alliance. But Dr Hassan had said in the past that Anni cannot make a party, Ibra cannot make a party, and there will be only one party in Maldives, and that is DRP. b) Dr Hassan sanctioned unfair promotions and practiced nepotism while in office. Read about Dr Hassan's unethical practices from http://antinewmaldives.blogspot.com
c) It was Dr Shaheed who lied to the international media and Maldivian public and whitewashed the torture in Maldives in his role as Chief Government Spokesperson and later as Foreign Minister.
I can add several more to the list. But I am too tired and frustrated that well educated young people are forgetting that Hassan Saeed and Shaheed kicked us in the stomach during our journey for freedom. Let there be light someday.

I applaud your optimism Hamza. I can only hope it will be free and fair.
However, what you are arguing here also means that having the institutions is the end of it.
In reality it is not. We have to realize that we are carrying 30 years of baggage as well.
Do you really believe that the corruption and evil inbuilt will disappear with a two-week old elections commission and other independent commissions who have thus far only created reports and have failed to take real action?
The fear, intimidation and and the corrupt culture here will take time to disappear.
It will take time for the civil society to play the game with the corrupt bastards.
Thats what politics is...Democracy is the tyranny of the majority. So the minority will need to learn a way to balance it...

Anni is not an angel from God. Just like all of us here, he too is a product of the corrupt, unjust and unethical system. He may be the lesser of the evil. But don't fool yourself and close your mind to his shortcomings...
Sadly it will not be a free and fair election. But as you say, it may be more transparent than it ever was....

Maldivain people are not stupid to vote anni or maumoon
We need not a leader who is dictator maumoon or anni: famous for stipulating violence on the streets also who talked about corruption, transparency and accountability but as chairperson also lead party campaigns -Where are MDP audit reports, where are details of funds of three campaigns he lead (that was promised to be made public)…They say the worst are those who don t follow what their mouth speaks and Anni is one good example. Why not Anni be the change and make public at least the details of his present campaign finances?? For the least why don t he give details of the procurement policy of MDP in printing campaign materials and how fair is the policy ?? or tell people its corruption free..
Can a person who is not accountable to a couple of thousand membership party be accountable, corruption free and follow best practices that he claims he is advocating for: follow in a system to serve 300 000 people nation.
Who could be a better leader than Hassan Saeed: a common man with vision and competence to make a better Maldives
